About Tony Boutagy, PhD

For more than thirty years, Tony Boutagy, PhD, has worked at the intersection of exercise science and practical coaching.

In that time, he has written over 72,000 training programs, coached clients from their teens into their 90s — with many staying for more than twenty years — and trained athletes across 33 different sports, including Olympic, Commonwealth Games, Paralympic, and Masters competitors.

He has also educated tens of thousands of coaches and fitness professionals through courses, university lectures, and industry conferences.

His approach has always been the same: combine the best available research with what has been learned coaching real people, and teach others to apply that knowledge with clarity, precision, and context.

Education & Academic Background

Tony holds a Bachelor of Sports Science (Human Movement) and a PhD in Exercise & Sport Science.

His doctoral research focused on optimal preparation for speed, strength, and power — studying how the body adapts to training under different physiological conditions.

Over the past 3 decades, Tony has

  • Lectured for the Australian Institute of Sport (1999–2010)

  • Taught across multiple Australian universities and fitness colleges
